CLASS DESCRIPTION: Butoh – A Somatic Workshop is a class to learn and explore the training and art of Butoh, as practiced by founding butoh artists Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, and first generation artist Min Tanaka and others. The class combines the rigorous physical training known as BWL, imagination work, and guided improvisational exercises fueled through self-inquiry. The Art of Butoh is rooted in somatic awareness and personal investigation of the body and its relation to the environment. Discussions are often part of the class as we investigate performance and the political. Bring your curiosity and your genius.
TEACHER BIO: Maya Gingery is an LA-based experimental dance artist, musician and educator. She has been a butoh practitioner since 1989 and has been teaching it since 2009. She welcomes conversation.
Hope to see you soon!
