We’ll get dorky about ideas such as weight-shift, energetic modulation, and alignment. These newfound connections will be our groundwork for either phrase work or ensemble improvisation. Tackling ideas such as time-bending, shared energetic frequencies, and interdependence, we will hone in on how to compose while listening and developing an emergent, kinetic language.
Led by Sam Wentz, former dancer with the Trisha Brown Dance Company, this five-day workshop will focus on dynamic alignment, improvising as an ensemble, and interdependence. There will be a daily, somatics-based warm up culminating in either phrase work or improvisation. While this intensive is geared toward for pre-professional dancers (17+) and professional dance and movement artists, people of all levels of experience are welcome.
Sam Wentz, originally from North Dakota, started his professional training at Idyllwild Arts Academy (’06), received his BFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts (’09), and was awarded the Teaching Fellowship as an MFA candidate at Bennington College (’16). He has worked with the Trisha Brown Dance Company (2009-14), Wally Cardona & Jennifer Lacey, Jay Carlon, Gerald Casel, Jmy James Kidd, Mark Morris Dance Group and Christopher Williams. Since 2013, he has been a returning guest teacher at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, BE. A regular teacher for the Trisha Brown Dance Company classes, he has also taught company class to Anna Theresa De Keersmaeker’s Rosas Company. He will be joining the CalArts dance faculty in September 2018. His class is influenced by his studies with Barbara Mahler, Gerald Casel, and the work of Trisha Brown.
