The Sunland Dancers are led by Jmy James Kidd with Perrin Hailey McNelis, Jil Stein Lisa Wahlander, and Alexa Weir.
Gateway plant/bush/tree, when I had to ask myself what it was about (on my way home from a residency and early showing at New Museum in NYC, cause they asked a lot of questions there)….. Gateway was very new — I had movement material and was working with something, I knew that much. I realized on the plane ride back home that this piece was about my own personal acceptance of death/dying. An acknowledgement that I will die, my friends will all die someday. The title was already Gateway. A couple weeks later my father called me to tell me he was dying of cancer, he thought he had about a month to live and he did. I usually begin working alone and when I started working with The SUNLAND dancer people group it was knowing that my father was dying. Gateway was a gateway for all of us, Alexa Weir was pregnant, Perrin Hailey McNelis was planning her move back home to Tucson and there were all sorts of other Gateways we discovered and keep discovering.
The structure of Gateway are the bits of movements that come from my body, some in sequence, others floating singularly. I teach them to the Sunland Dancers and they can be puzzled together in any way. There is no order of movement tho there are some sequences that have worked better than others we have learned. There is sort of a start but it doesn’t have to start that way even and there is no end and the movement we practice doesn’t really matter, doesn’t have to be used at all during the dance — it is only there as a support system to go back to, leave from or just be in.
“Not” or 100 steps is the next phase of Gateway and will hopefully have some more connection between humans, some more connection with sounds and rhythms and ways of growing out of the plant/bush/tree. I am working on seeing/feeling how the plant/bush/tree can and will flower. Flowering individually or maybe in clusters. I am working on new outfits for this phase, garments that can be layered or can replace the other outfits. Hopefully flowers with bees and butterflies and hummingbirds.
