Libido Power Studio (LPS): Winter Workshops with Doran George

Workshop 2: Breathing Sex: Regulating and Channeling Erotic Energy

Breathing Sex is the second of three workshops in the Libido Power Studio (LPS) series, which brings together practices from sex positivism, Somatic body training, performance art techniques, and dance improvisation. Dancers, performers, and anyone who wants to enjoy their body, prosper from connecting erotic energy, breath, sound and movement. Depending on how our bodies are gendered and sexualized, we may have been denied access to erogenous zones, had them over-emphasized, found our libidos separated from the rest of our experience, or found that our sexuality is collapsed into a demeaned identity. This shaming of our sexual nature compartmentalizes us, sometimes locking erotic energy into one area of the body, and other times denying its existence or value. This affects how we breathe, make sound, and move. In Breathing Sex, we will explore how breath facilitates and regulates erotic energy’s flow, and we will cultivate sensory access to our erogenous zones, opening channels through which our libido can move internally. The exercises we practice will charge our moving and sounding, providing new avenues for artistic and sexual expression.

Breath is a prime vehicle with which to move erotic energy around the body, meanwhile by opening our erotic channels we can breathe into the body more fully and go beyond social protocols of appropriateness for sounding and moving. In Breathing Sex, we will engage communal practices of breathing, moving and sounding. For example we will learn the “Big Draw,” a technique that people use to erotically charge the body, which many find releases unwanted psychic, emotional, and physical baggage. As we invite the flow of erotic energy to facilitate fuller breathing, we will access a broader vocal range, and a deeper connection to movement, which in turn will further enhance our connection to libido. As with the other workshops, Breathing Sex builds safety by focusing on mutual and self-care, and foregrounding personal desire, which enables you to explore your movement and sounding in your dancing, performing and personal life. The workshop is clothing optional, which means that nudity is not required but welcome; in short, there will be opportunities to get naked (or stay clothed) and dance. Doran enjoys talking about the work, so if you have questions, concerns or hesitations, please get in contact with them.

Cost:

1 Workshop $60.

2 Workshops $100. (if prepaid.)

The last workshop in the series, on March 11th, is Sensational Flesh: Raising and Riding Erotic Charge. In this workshop we will recuperate eroticism as a key to kinesthetic awareness in performance. The series builds as it progresses, but you are welcome to join either or both of the workshops whether or not you have taken the first.

As part of Libido Power Studio, Doran is staging Unspoken at Pieter on February 5th and March 12th, a durational one-on-one performance: Sensing exchange, through looks, gestures, and physical listening, audience members will be invited to negotiate short packets of intimate time with Doran in a small blanket castle. See Pieter’s website for details.
