Feb 25, Mar 4, Mar 11: Michelle Sui // Songs of Body: Singing is for everybody

This class explores the unity of voice and body as one whole. Students will be encouraged to discover the power and range of motion in their individual voices and bodies while embracing their unique idiosyncrasies. All will be guided through an intuitive and improvisational approach to movement and singing, allowing the voice to travel and resonant through the whole body, and the body to respond. Classes will begin with a physical and vocal warm-up and venture into explorations in vocal expression, composition, or performance (see details for each class).

No prior singing or dancing experience necessary.

1. Improvisations // a lesson on listening (Feb 25)
2. Circular songs with dances // a lesson on noticing (Mar 4)
3. Compositions // a lesson on shaping (Mar 11)

Michelle Sui is a performer, vocalist, composer, choreographer, and director whose interdisciplinary music compositions have been called “Raw Power” (Opera Mag) and “Powerful” (Flavorwire). These works have been presented in various cities internationally and extensively in NYC. Michelle’s musical background spans opera, jazz and improvisation, and many polyphonic folk music traditions. Her ongoing research and teaching in women’s folk music traditions and the human voice has taken her to Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and various autonomous regions of China known for their diverse music and dance traditions. Michelle’s embodied vocal music, which serves as the foundation of her performance work, stems from her background as actor, dancer, and vocalist and her merging of these forms. Her “Songs of Body” practice is rooted in a holistic, joyful approach to singing through explorations in unifying the voice and body as one whole. She has led embodied voice workshops internationally at performance institutions as advanced training for the performer as well as at community centers as music therapy for kids and adults.
