The Monday Morning Class Series, Curated by Stacy Dawson Stearns, has fallen in love with the NIGHT. We changed. We bid adieu to the day. Fall with us into the dark comfort of evening as we continue the ongoing exchange of body-based creative practices led by teaching artists who practice within the phases of consciousness and creation. Nourish your practice and embrace Lunacy. #getheetoclass @MNCPieter
December 10 and 17: Stacy Dawson Stearns // THE SIX VIEWPOINTS: SSTEMS
“This work does not have a pre-existing idea of what theater is, how it should be created, what it should say or how it should say it. In entering this work the artist finds that they take possession of the stage and are anchored in its realities free of the opinions of others about how to make theater.”
– Mary Overlie, originator of The Six Viewpoints (SSTEMS)
Stacy studied the Six Viewpoints (SSTEMS) with Mary Overlie at the Experimental Theater Wing at NYU throughout the early 90’s. In concert with physical acting techniques, kinetic awareness, and the mosaic of somatic and consciousness-shifting creative practices offered within that revolutionary program, Viewpoints deeply influenced her artistry. These 2 sessions will combine instruction with long-form dives into the SSTEMS so participants can observe and encounter the concepts of Space, Shape, Time, Emotion, Movement, and Story as the wild materials they are within the infinite landscape that they generate through simple mingling.
Curious physical experimenters of all kinds and levels of experience welcome.
Stacy Dawson Stearns is a performer, choreographer, director, and teacher based in Los Angeles. She collaborated with Big Dance Theater from 1993-2001, receiving a Bessie Award for her performance in Another Telepathic Thing. Stacy recently returned to Big Dance Theater to play the role of Kreon in the NYC premiere of Anne Carson’s Antigonick, at Abrons Arts Center, November 2018. Stacy’s most recent dance/theater work, LOVE GASOLINE!, is an erotic encounter with Marcel Duchamp’s famously unfinished piece, The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even. Originally premiering at REDCAT in Los Angeles in July 2017 before playing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, LOVE GASOLINE! is currently in post-production as a film abstraction of itself. Stacy is the curator of Monday Night Class at Pieter. stacydawsonstearns.com
