December 17: Tanya Kane-Parry // THE SIX VIEWPOINTS: SSTEMS

“This work does not have a pre-existing idea of what theater is, how it should be created, what it should say or how it should say it. In entering this work the artist finds that they take possession of the stage and are anchored in its realities free of the opinions of others about how to make theater.”

– Mary Overlie, originator of The Six Viewpoints (SSTEMS)

Curious physical experimenters of all kinds and levels of experience welcome.

Tanya Kane-Parry is a director and choreographer in dance, theatre and opera, and is the Director of the MFA in Television, Film and Theatre at Cal State LA. An alum of the Experimental Theatre Wing at NYU/Tisch, Tanya has taught Viewpoints for over 25 years, around the world (France, Russia, Peru, Mexico, Argentina and more), as well as across the country. Her time, study and co-teaching with Mary Overlie motivated Tanya to dig deep into the theory and practice of Viewpoints, which informs all of her creative work, across all mediums of performance. An outcrop of this practice was the creation of the eclectic performance group, Opera del Espacio, formed initially to present pop-up Viewpoints-based improvised performances in public spaces around Los Angeles, eventually leading to invitations to festivals and the creation of new multi-media theatrical and dance works.
