Bio: Anise (she/they) is a choreographer, intimacy coordinator, improviser, and dance scholar who examines Black dance history and its role in body-based well being. Anise began their dance career with the Nyane Khosi Dance Company in New York, led by South African choreographer Tumi Nkomo. They have performed alongside Urban Bush Women in the 2018 SLI Jazz vignette. For a decade, Anise has dedicated herself to studying jazz dance with Black educators in Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles.
As an artist, Anise explores themes such as improvisation, the integration of comedy and chaos, intimacy and the use of erotic expression as a means of liberation and self-dignity. Anise led the “Hip Magix” Project at Pieter and conducts consent-based workshops for improvisers and dancers, stemming from their work as an intimacy coordinator and choreographer for film, TV, and theater.
