Description: In the midst of massive social upheaval and abandonment, it becomes increasingly necessary for us to connect, heal, dance, dream, grieve and learn together. And it also means that those of us bringing people together in shared space may be navigating new risks, and thus, assuming unprecedented responsibility in a rapidly-changing world.
Inspired by the decades-long work of grassroots abolitionists and anti-violence organizers, this mixer will bring community together to meet one another, share food, meditate, and begin identifying issues around justice and safety in each of our contexts. The collective needs and desires that arise from the evening’s conversation will help determine future training topics in Pieter’s JAS Club Presents series and commitment to working together to solve them. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
Pieter’s JAS Club invites artists, dancers, healers, activists, and people who organize or staff art & performance-based events, programs, and parties in LA to kick off the launch of JAS Club Presents, a series of monthly trainings focused on skilling up to be better prepared to keep people safe in our spaces.
What to expect: Drop in anytime between 4-6pm to enjoy the garden, food, and company. You will be invited to do a 15-minute walking meditation on your own, an El Sereno Community Garden practice, &/or a guided group meditation happening at 4:30pm & 5pm. During the event, Pieter staff will be collecting feedback about your experience navigating safety and accountability in other art and performing spaces over the last couple of years. You are welcome to participate in whichever aspects of the program you feel comfortable with.
Safety protocols: Masks are required at all Pieter programming and our Button Buddy system will be used.
Accessibility note: There is an ADA accessible ramp to enter the garden as well as an ADA accessible restroom on site. please contact pieterpasd@gmail.com for any access questions or needs.
Bio: Pieter Performance Space is a home for all people to dance, create, and heal together with the belief that embodiment liberates. We say “all people” because dance spaces historically exclude those who are non-white, non-able, non-”fit,” non-”healthy,” non-young, non-cisgendered and non-independently-wealthy. Dance includes a broad spectrum of body-based practices and the cultivation of culture. Rooted in Los Angeles, Pieter fosters a just and expansive community of movement artists, healers and activists.
JAS Club Presents is a series of monthly trainings intended to hone the anti-violence and community safety skills of LA’s dancers, artists, and healers. At Pieter, we believe that safety facilitates embodiment, and that taking care of one another is a choreography we can all learn. Trainings are designed for people who organize or staff art & performance-based events, programs, and parties in LA with the hope that our learning will ripple across each of our communities through ongoing practice.
This series is guided by the work of Pieter’s Justice, Accountability, & Safety (JAS) Club, made up of staff, board members, teaching artists & other stakeholders committed to shifting the culture of Pieter to center the needs of queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, & disabled dancers.
